50 Ways To Better Business: #6: Know Your Equipment

audio of this post:

KNOW YOUR EQUIPMENT

Every business owner should know what equipment they have and what is the current operational status of each piece of equipment.

This serves two purposes:

     • It ensures that your organization has a right tools to do the job
     • It ensures that the tools are in working condition

If you have not done so already create an inventory of all your equipment.

This inventory of all your equipment should include (at least) the following:

     • exact name
     • serial number
     • date of purchase
     • price
     • who it is assigned to (or marked for general use)
     • dates of inventory
     • current operational status

Most devices have something called MTBF (mean time between failures).  Which means what the average life expectancy is before you start having problems.  Once you determine what the MTBF is and how close you are to reaching that time you can start working on a replacement cycle for all items on your inventory.

So know what you have out there, Who is using it,  How long it has been used , and start planning to replace it .

By keeping the equipment up and running your employees can keep doing their job and in the end isn't that what you want?
