50 Ways To Better Business: #36: Focus On What Is and Is NOT Working

It is a simple command to tell yourself: "Focus on what is working and keep doing it!" However, this is about the most difficult thing anyone can do.

What we tend to do is consume our time, energy, and resources focusing on what is not working, not right or missing. We get caught in the mess and give ourselves tunnel vision. By doing that we miss out on what we can make better and make us successful.

Then again, to focus solely on what is working will be counter-productive as it give us tunnel vision as well.

So what's the right answer?

The answer is look at everything, a complete 360° degree view of your entire operation. Yes, it can be done with both an objective and subjective eye. Don't let anyone ever tell you different. You have to be disciplined to know at how to look at things. You must maintain that discipline even when things do not look so good.

Then after seeing everything from all sides of the organization, then you can start drawing attention to what is NOT working and do what you can to MAKE IT WORK! Also, don't forget to draw attention to what IS working and figure out how to apply that to what is not working.

Remember, you are responsible for the good and bad of your organization. You have to fix things and you also have to ensure that things keep working. Do all that and the company will keep moving in the right direction.
